Peril’s cave

Buck grew fretful.

Her heart accelerated as she glanced around hopefully trying to find the group that she and Max was with. Curiously, Max had traversed deeper into the clouds of darkness that concealed the majority of the cave. Becky insisted:

“Max! Instead of wandering around why don’t you help me.” Max dozed back and pealed his eyes around for their group. Unsuccessful, the children ventured into the darkness until they were completely shrouded by it. They held each other’s hand firmly while they groped around trying to escape the maze of darkness. Suddenly sticks of light prodded at the darkness and they knew that they had managed to pass through; the children trudged far enough for the darkness to slip back into the crevices of the cave. Buck glued her ears to the air and could hear a succession of thuds heading towards them. Without blurting the news to Max, Buck bolted in the direction of the sound as Max tried to keep up. The thuds started to ascend in noise.

But as their hopes raised, they had found nothing but were alarmed to see the cave’s wall slowly compress and disintegrate into a mixture of stone and mud. Panic-stricken Max and Buck jolted cluelessly through the cave and ended up at a dead end. As their hope slipped away, they saw a light that lead to the surface. Without wasting any time Max scrambled onto Buck’s shoulders and heaved himself through the hole in the cave’s ceiling. Time was running out; Max – who was already on the surface, reached out to Buck and clutched onto her hand. Max tugged and tugged and finally managed to haul Buck out.

Max wrapped Buck’s arm onto his shoulder and as they reached his house, he whispered “there’s no place like home.”
